Curtis worked for 11 years for the international accounting firm of KPMG in Salt Lake City, UT before leaving to go into private practice in 2006.  At KPMG, Curtis was a senior manager and led their Personal Financial Planning (PFP) practice and was the Pacific Northwest's area Generation Skipping Transfer Tax Specialist.

Curtis joined Dave Roberts in 2009 to form the firm Trader Roberts & Associates.  He has served many years on various tax review sub-committees for the State of Utah and was nominated by Utah's governor to chair on Utah's Tax Review Commission.  Curtis is a past president of the Salt Lake Estate Planning Council.  

Curtis routinely serves large nationally recognized companies and family held businesses, and is recognized as an industry leader in trust and individual taxation.

Curtis is a graduate with a Masters of Accounting in Taxation of Brigham Young University.

MATTHEW ORTON, CPA

Matt Orton never thought he would be a CPA until he took accounting classes in college.  He fell in love with debits and credits and never looked back!  

Matt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accountancy from Boise State University in 1999 and began his professional career in 2000 at Cooper Norman in Twin Falls, Idaho.  He continued his career path with Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP in Tysons Corner, Virginia, and later with Tanner LLC in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served as a Tax Director.  Matt became a Partner at Trader Orton Spangler in January 2020.  

Throughout his career, Matt has developed valuable expertise in many disciplines, particularly tax preparation and consulting for businesses and individuals, tax planning, income tax provision calculations (ASC 740), accounting systems, and financial statement preparation and analysis.

Matt has served clients in a wide range of industries, including real estate, manufacturing, software, retail, etc.

Aside from having strong technical skills, Matt has been praised by clients and colleagues for being easy to work with and being able to explain complex tax and accounting concepts in normal English (and Spanish when needed)!

ROBERT SPANGLER, CPA

Rob started his career working for "Big 4" accounting firms including KPMG in Salt Lake City and Deloitte in Los Angeles and Orange County, California. During his 11 years with these industry leaders, Rob gained expertise in tax planning and preparation for individuals, corporations and partnerships. Rob is licensed as a CPA in Utah and California.

For 6 years prior to joining the firm in September 2011, Rob worked for the international direct selling giant XanGo as the VP of Finance and Tax and as Chief Financial Officer. Rob's leadership and strategic vision helped XanGo refine its US business operations and expand into over 20 new international markets spanning 6 continents. This experience makes him an invaluable resource to companies and individuals doing business both domestically and internationally.

Rob enjoys working with his clients to solve business and individual tax problems. Rob also provides outsourced tax director and CFO-related services to emerging and mature companies.

Rob graduated from Brigham Young University with a Masters of Accounting in Taxation.

RANDALL HILL, CPA

Randall worked for over 23 years for the international accounting firm of KPMG in Salt Lake City and San Francisco before leaving to join Trader Orton and Spangler in 2021.  At KPMG, Randall was a Tax Managing Director and led the Salt Lake City Alternative Investment (AI) practive. and has experience in corporate, individual, and partnership taxation for both private and public companies.

Randall has been responsible for a broad range of clients over his career including individuals, multi-national businesses, S Corporations, C Corporations, and Partnerships. Randall’s current and past clients include companies operating in many different industries including venture capital, private equity, retail, and manufacturing. Randall has provided a wide range of services to his clients including:

Tax planning and compliance for individual taxpayers.

Assisting corporate clients with understanding and applying income tax provision reporting requirements for financial statement purposes.

Planning and delivery of tax compliance services and investor reporting for large private equity and venture capital funds, including U.S. reporting and withholding requirements applicable to foreign investors.

Randall graduated from Utah State University with a Masters of Accountancy in Tax Emphasis.
